Theatre and political transformation in post-revolutionary Egypt – Screening and talk between Nora Amin and Stefan Weidner

In cooperation with the Orientalisches Seminar der Universität zu Köln.

In 2013, when the Muslim Brotherhood still ruled over the unsettled post-revolutionary period in Egypt, the independent theatre company Lamusica, founded by Nora Amin, decided to work on an adaption of Henrik Ibsen’s sociocritical play An Enemy of the People (1882). Produced at a time marked by a curfew, violent confrontations on Tahrir Square, and regime change, it would emerge mirroring the fluid political situation as a constant flow of transitions. For one year filmmaker Ibrahim Ghareib (also artistic partner in Lamusica Independent Theatre Group) followed this process by filming and reflecting with director, actress, and writer Nora Amin, ultimately resulting in the documentary An Enemy Of The People: The Journey To Survival (2014, 55 Min, Arabic with English subtitles), an intimate portrait about theatre as a politicial tool for survival.  After the screening Academy-Member Stefan Weidner and Academy-Fellow Nora Amin will join in discussion to further explore the relationship between politics, society and theatre in times of social unrest.
