“Sympathy for the other?” is an interdisciplinary documentary film project organized by ifs (internationale filmschule köln) and Beit Berl College (BBC), Israel. The topic is “notions of identity in multicultural societies in Israel and Germany”. From mid August until mid September four BBC students will come to North Rhine-Westfalia, while selected ifs students will realize projects in Israel.

Throughout the summer semester 2016 two workshops were held at BBC Israel as well as at ifs Cologne to introduce the topic of identity, multiculturalism and migration. Subsequently the students developed project ideas, of which four projects (two of each school) were chosen to be realized in mixed teams composed of ifs and and BCC students in the summer of 2016.

In North Rhine-Westfalia, the following projects will be realized under supervison of ifs tutors: In “So One May Walk in Peace” by BBC student Adam Souriano (in collaboration with Tommy Cohen) we get to know “Krav Maga” coach Nico Schüssler, whose self-defense courses in Dortmund became more and more popular in our ever-growing culture of fear. “The Bus” by BBC students Jotam Eitan und Ron Goldin shows the reactions of locals of a small town in Germany towards refugees – specifically looking at a bus line, a microcosm in which certain interactions between Germans and newcomers take place.

Residency dates:
Adam Souriano: August 21 – September 6
Tommy Cohen: August 28 – September 6
Ron Goldin: September 4 – 27
Jotam Eitan: September 18 – 27
